Subject: [JacksonPlaceCommunityCouncil] Casa Latina update -- all calm

Dear Neighbors,

Last you heard from me, I was in the midst of putting down a mini-revolution at the Workers' Center. I just wanted to update you all and let you know that things have calmed down for us. The small group of protesters followed us to our new site, but only stayed around for a short time. They made our lives miserable the first day that we opened the Center screaming insults at the staff and registered workers, but then disappeared. Rumor has it that they dissolved because of in-fighting.

This month we successfully moved the Workers' Center to our new building and in 10 days have oriented and registered 204 immigrant men and women, and put another110 people on the waiting list to get in. Every day we have to turn away people who are coming to register with us; most of them are unemployed, but some of them are registering as an insurance policy in case they lose their jobs. We will not be registering new workers until we can send enough people to work from the current list of registered workers. If you have any work around the house, please call us to hire workers! We have plenty of eager hard workers waiting for jobs. Now is a great time to do some spring cleaning in the house or the garden.

Call to hire workers at 206-956-0779.

In solidarity,

Hilary
